International Union of Operating Engineers

IUOE has been a Charter Member of the AFL-CIO since 1896. It presently has some 400,000 members in the United States and Canada. IUOE's headquarters office is located in Washington, D.C.

The IUOE represents two groups: Operating Engineers, who work as heavy equipment operators, mechanics, and surveyors in the construction industry; and Stationary Engineers, who work in operations and maintenance in building and industrial complexes and in the service industries.

The IUOE also represents nurses and other health industry workers as well as significant numbers of public employees engaged in a wide variety of occupations.

A Local is a chartered subdivision of the International Union. Locals are given a charter by the International Union to organize and represent all employees within an industry in the specialty for which they are trained. The Charter also specifies the jurisdiction, that is, the geographic region for which they have exclusive rights to organize and represent.
